Businesses in the region survive and thrive by finding skilled and eager employees who want to contribute to the success of the business. Many employers are experiencing increased difficulty in finding candidates who are skilled and job ready. One potential solution is to look differently at the challenge of matching job requirements and abilities and thereby tap into an underutilized talent pool; persons with disabilities.
There are many agencies and service providers in the region that can assist with various aspects of hiring and retaining persons with disabilities. The Making Cent$ of Abilities Coalition (MCAC) is a not for profit initiative that focuses on informing and educating employers (large and small) with respect to the realities of, and benefits to, hiring and retaining persons with disabilities. MCAC is having their formal launch on October 20, 2011 at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. The audiences for the launch are business owners and leaders and senior HR people who impact the hiring practices of the company. There will be speakers from companies who are already enjoying the benefits of hiring persons with disabilities as well as displays from agencies and companies featuring adaptive technologies and specialized recruiting.
Numerous companies in the region have benefitted by accessing the talents of persons with disabilities and these companies continue to ensure that the recruitment practices they use focus on the abilities that are being offered by any given candidate. The reason they do so is always the same: it’s not about being nice…it’s good business. For more information check out www.makingcentsofabilities.com
